Mursko Središće was primarily a mining town in its not-so-distant history, and due to that past, Miners' Day is celebrated every year. On Wednesday, March 2, a city delegation with a few still-living miners laid wreaths and candles next to the Miner's monument that adorns the central square in Murski Središće. 45 years have passed since the closing of the last mine in Murski Središće, and it should be said that at its peak, 1,700 people from Murski Središće and its surroundings were employed in the Međimurje coal mines. There is practically no family in the town and its surroundings where at least one member was not a miner. Because of this, the town is still significantly marked by its mining past.

Mining in the area of Murski Središće was active from the end of the 19th and during the 20th century, and the mine shafts were closed in the 1970s.
