Fahlburg Castle, originally known as “Turm zu Vall”, was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Zobel. After the dynasty died out, the heirs fought over its properties. The poet and lyric singer Oswald von Wolkenstein is said to have been held prisoner by Barbara Jäger in the tower, where he is said to have also composed songs in which he bitterly denounced the torture he had suffered. In 1597, Jakob Andrä von Brandis took over the property, which he then decided to transform into a Renaissance castle in 1640. Today, the castle is in the hands of Count Jakob von Brandis, a descendant of the Counts von Brandis dynasty. Inside the building, there are still old tiled stoves, wooden ceilings and masterpieces by the Baroque painter Stefan Kessler. The castle’s private chapel, built on two floors, is dedicated to All Saints.

After more than 400 years of family ownership, the castle was sold in 2021 to the Athesia Group, whose founder in South Tyrol, Canon Michael Gamper, was born and raised in the immediate vicinity. The castle has been lovingly restored since 2023.
