Quinta da Cardiga was donated to the Knights Templar in 1169 by D. Afonso Henriques for clearing and cultivation. After the Knights Templar were dissolved, it passed into the hands of the Order of Christ, who built a summer farm there (1540-1542). The design of the entire estate (including the mansion, barn, chapel and cloister) is attributed to the architect João de Castilho.
Quinta da Cardiga is today one of the most notable properties in the country.
