The artwork is a representation of the molecule mustard gas (C4H8Cl2S)[2], made of stainless steel. Mustard gas was first used in Ypres during the First World War and was later known as yperite. The monument commemorates the countless victims of the gas attacks during the First World War.[3] On the edge of the area where the poison attacks were launched, the artwork stands as a symbol for all forms of senseless violence. Overlooking the meadows and the Kluisberg, the annually flowering mustard plants form a recurring sign of hope and peace.[3]
