    Installation in 1978
    Karl-Heinz Klein (*1926)
St. Antonius Church, south side (Herten-Mitte market square)

After the sacristy of St. Antonius Church was expanded, a wooden figure of St. Antonius was initially attached to the outer corner of the wall in 1958, but it soon showed severe signs of weathering. In its place, high above market stalls and parked cars, St. Sebastian now dies a martyr's death by arrows.

Sebastian, a native of Milan, was part of the bodyguard of Emperor Diocletian (243-313), who vigorously persecuted Christians. Because Sebastian helped his fellow believers in distress and continued to convert Romans, the emperor had him tied to a stake and shot at by archers. He survived and, nursed back to health, confronted Diocletian with accusations, whereupon Diocletian had him killed.

The naked, arrow-pierced young martyr has been one of the favorite saints of the visual arts since the Renaissance. The Herten statue also follows this tradition. The Düsseldorf sculptor Karl-Heinz Klein created the sculpture on behalf of the St. Sebastianus Guild, which was founded in Herten around 1620 and committed itself to practical charity under the lasting impression of the great plague epidemics.
