Tips

  • In Swabian, a duck clamper (Entaklemmer or Endaklemmer)[1] is understood to mean a stingy person. The origin of the term is explained by the fact that ducks lay their eggs not only in the nest, but also in the wild. If the duck is to be allowed to roam freely, the duck clamper pinches the rear part of the duck's body with their thumb and index finger to feel whether an egg will be laid soon. If this is the case, the duck is ordered to be kept in a stable[2] so that it does not lay the egg in the wild and thus out of reach of its owner. Another explanation for the term Entenklemmer is that the seller squeezes an egg out of the duck before selling it, keeping it for themselves and not passing it on to the subsequent buyer.
