The Teneguía is located in the municipality of Fuencaliente de La Palma, south of the town of Los Canarios. It forms the southern end of the volcanic chain of the Cumbres (Cumbre Nueva and Cumbre Vieja), which runs through the island of La Palma from the Caldera de Taburiente to the south.

Above it lies the 657-meter-high cone of San Antonio, which last erupted in 1677.

The first eruption began on October 26, 1971. This was followed by rhythmic ejections of gas and fragmented lava. The last eruption occurred after three and a half weeks on the 24th day, November 18, 1971. In between there were dozens of events at a total of five eruption sites, some of which were active at different times and were mostly effusive. The total eruptive mass was estimated at 40 million cubic meters. The ejected lava flowed into the sea in several places and created around 29 hectares of new land there. Two people died from suffocation by CO2.
