On August 15, 1909 the foundation stone was laid for St. Joseph's Church. Pastor Hellweg carried out the church consecration on All Saints' Day in 1910 and placed the church under the protection of St. Joseph. In the spring of 1911, pastor Anton Kaup became the first pastor of the new church. On October 1st, 1911 Sythen became the parish rectorate. It was not until December 1st, 1940 that the rectorate parish was officially elevated to the status of an independent parish.

This church in Sythen (Haltern am See) is dedicated to Saint Joseph, the foster father of Jesus Christ. Like Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist, he is a man on the threshold from the Old to the New Testament. Joseph was from the house of David, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. He was a carpenter by trade and the fiancé of the Blessed Mother Mary.
The feast day of Saint Joseph in the saints calendar is on March 19th, and on May 1st the church celebrates the feast of "Joseph the Worker".
