A heroon is a monument erected in commemoration of a hero, this one possibly dating to the 7th or 6th century BC. A heroon usually was not a real tomb as the body of the hero was not interred here, but it served as a place of cult worship. In a sense, the hero was still considered alive: he was offered meals and was imagined to be sharing feasts. His allegiance was seen as vitally important to the continued well being of the city.

On a platform of megalithic masonry you can see a large stone stele (rectangular stone plaque) while inside the platform two large chambers were reserved.

The name Gökçeröen means celestial ruins or blue ruins and reflects the fact that an important ancient settlement was located here.
