The first walls were built in the 12th century to serve as a watchtower and were further expanded by the people of Berlstedt at the beginning of the 13th century. In the middle of the 15th century it became the property of the von Schwarzburg family and was expanded in the Renaissance style.
Centuries later, the castle served as a hunting and summer residence - still belonging to the Schwarzbug-Sondershäusener family. After the death of Prince Karl Günther von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, the castle fell into the hands of the state of Thuringia, which temporarily used it as a residential building.
The castle was destroyed in a fire on September 11, 1933 and was largely demolished in the following years, so that only the remains of a few surrounding walls remain. At the turn of the millennium the ruins were secured, partially restored and made accessible.
