On October 25, 1500, the Bamberg auxiliary bishop Hieronymus von Reitzenstein consecrated a small (7.5 x 10.5m) half-timbered chapel on this spot in honor of St. Valentine, the Virgin Mary, the Holy Cross and other saints. There may already have been a wayside shrine on the site, perhaps even a smaller previous building. The impetus for the construction may have been the Holy Year of 1500. Perhaps the pilgrimage to Rome, which led from Erfurt via Coburg and Bamberg towards Nuremberg, also played a role.
