The village of Tar ana Roma in the Târnavelor Valley in Transylvania is located in a multi-ethnic region where Roma have lived since around 1400. Over the centuries they have been subjected to pressures of assimilation and sedentarization, especially under Empress Maria Theresa, Emperor Joseph II and during communism. Nevertheless, some Roma communities maintain their traditions to this day, especially in crafts such as tanning and copperworking. The exodus of the Saxons after World War II led to Roma and Romanians settling in their homes. Some Roma have integrated into new professions, while others continue to practice their traditional crafts.
