Bunker on a farm? Or a farm in a former anti-aircraft position? This is the question that everyone who drives between Knokke-Heist and Retranchement on the Retranchementstraat near the Burkeldijk asks themselves. Several bunkers from former anti-aircraft positions of the German Wehrmacht from World War II stand conspicuously in the farm's pastures, cows graze peacefully and almost make you forget the original warlike purpose of the concrete buildings. The bunkers are part of the remnants of the Atlantic Wall, which the Germans built between 1942 and 1944 to prevent the Allies from landing on the Belgian-Dutch North Sea coast; the bunkers are not accessible.
