In mid-June 1944, a number of German soldiers were captured by partisans during an attack in the city. However, they were released again shortly after a combing-out operation by the German troops was announced.
On July 1, 1944, there was another such raid, during which several alleged or actual partisans were arrested. The former German prisoners recognized seven of them as their guards or as their supporters. Four of them were ultimately chosen to be shot.
When the troops returned to the city, the residents of Gualdo were forced to gather in the local square and watch the four being shot. They fell shouting "Viva l'Italia!"
The lifeless bodies were left lying there until the following day as a warning. One day later, the German troops left the city - after blowing up the Ponte Novo bridge.
In November 1945, two collaborators who were said to have shown the way to the German troops were arrested. However, they were released in February 1946 and the case was dropped due to lack of evidence.
