The Melchior House, which is located on the Great Market, is the oldest known secular house in Montabaur. It was probably built around 1560, at least that is what the late Gothic architecture and the inscription on the house suggest. The latter was unfortunately lost in the 1960s. The Melchior House, which has taken on various names over the years, including "Hübinger-König", served as a salt warehouse for the administration of the Electorate of Trier.
