The square takes its name from the bloody episode of July 7, 1960 when, during a union demonstration, five workers from Reggio (Lauro Farioli, Ovidio Franchi, Emilio Reverberi, Marino Serri, Afro Tondelli) were killed by the police. The massacre was the culmination of a period of high tension and clashes throughout Italy following the formation of the Tambroni government with the decisive support of the MSI, and the choice of Genoa (a “partisan” city and former Gold Medal of the Resistance) as the venue for the MSI party congress.
The 5 killed Reggio Emilia residents are remembered by the monument by Giacomo Fontanesi, dedicated to their memory.
Piazza Martiri is adjacent to Piazza della Vittoria with which, following the recent redevelopment of both, it forms a single large meeting space for the city.
Some of the most representative monuments and buildings of the city overlook it: the Teatro Municipale Valli, the Palazzo dei Musei, the Ex Palazzo della Banca d'Italia, the east side of the Isolato San Rocco and the Monument to the Resistance. The latter, inaugurated on 25 April 1958, is a bronze work on a granite base by the sculptor Remo Brioschi. Not far away, next to the theatre is the shrine bearing the names of the fallen of the Reggio Resistance for the independence of our country.
The square hosts numerous initiatives and city events throughout the year and, every Tuesday and Friday, is animated by the stalls of the weekly market.
