The structure dates back to the Venetian rule period (approx. 18th century).
The word „Vardiola" derives from the Italian guardiola and means guard or observatory. These towers were used to protect the coasts of the Ionian Islands from pirate attacks and enemy fleets.
Typical for this construction style are the compact dimensions, massive stone walls, and a characteristic, square-pyramidal roof.
