According to unconfirmed accounts, there was already a wooden temple in these areas during the reign of Mieszko I in 991. The existence of the church is unlikely, as it is based solely on traditional old accounts, but it is evidence of the existence of a Christian community in these areas. Near the village of Jakubów, there is a miraculous spring known since the 12th century; a place where pilgrims go. It is named after St. James, from whom the name of the town was taken. The existence of a Gothic church subordinate to the Głogów canonry has been documented since 1376. In 1571 (the Reformation period), the church was taken over by Protestants and converted into a church. During the Thirty Years' War, Swedish soldiers destroyed the altar and robbed the votive offerings. The Catholic Church in these areas was not reborn until the mid-19th century.
