The Porto Vecchio, or "Old Port," of Desenzano del Garda is located in the center of town and was first mentioned in 1274. In the past, goods for the market were unloaded from barges here. Today, only small boats remain in the cozy harbor, which is considered a major landmark of the town.

Particularly worth seeing are the ancient arcade surrounding Piazza Malvezzi, right next to the harbor, and the monument to Angela Merici, the founder of the Order of Saint Ursula, located in the center.

Due to its favorable location, Desenzano del Garda was already a nationally important port in Roman times. The city became prosperous from the 15th century under Venetian rule, primarily through the grain trade. Porto Vecchio, the old port, flanked by magnificent Venetian-style palazzi, is still a reminder of this past.
