In the middle of the glittering Staffelsee, surrounded by the rolling hills of the Bavarian Alpine foothills, lies the uninhabited island of "Große Birke". Its history goes back to the last ice age, when huge glaciers shaped the landscape and the lake was formed.

Around 15,000 years ago, when the glaciers melted, the resulting depression filled with water and formed the Staffelsee. The islands, including the "Große Birke", are remnants of these geological processes, shaped by rubble and sediment left behind by the glaciers. This island, with its dense vegetation and the characteristic birch trees after which it was named, is a place full of natural beauty and tranquility.

Over time, the "Große Birke" was never permanently inhabited. However, it is possible that it was previously used for livestock farming or hay production. Its untouched nature and the silence that prevails here now invite nature lovers and those seeking relaxation.

Today, the "Great Birch" belongs to a private individual who leaves it in its natural state. Nevertheless, the island is leased to the German Canoe Association (DKV). This gives members the opportunity to use the island as a starting point for canoe tours and other leisure activities in the Staffelsee. The lease agreement helps to keep the island in good condition and to regulate its use in the spirit of nature conservation.

Visitors who come to the "Great Birch" appreciate the seclusion and picturesque setting that make the island a special place in the heart of the Staffelsee. While the sun sparkles over the water and the wind blows gently through the trees, the "Great Birch" remains a peaceful retreat that preserves the untouched nature and beauty of the Staffelsee.
