During the First World War, many soldiers of the German and Russian armies were killed in Zarasai region and Turmant surroundings. Here, in the former village of Bartkiškės, a cemetery was established for the fallen soldiers of the 88th Infantry Division of the German Imperial Army. The preserved pink granite monument was dedicated to the division commander Lieutenant General Wilhelm von Menges and the fallen soldiers of this division.
