Volcan Mountain was on the list of locations for the Hale Telescope. Between 1928-1932, astronomers evaluated potential sites like this. The outposts were built to provide shelter. Palomar Mountain, 25 miles northwest of this site was chosen. The chimney is all that remains of the outpost.

Bikes are allowed on the trail. It gets pretty steep and has small rocks occasionally. There are portions of flat grassy meadows and clusters of shady pine trees that smell amazing.
