Parish Church of St. John the Baptist

The substructure of the tower was probably built in the middle of the 13th century, the choir and the central nave are of late Gothic origin. The tower was rebuilt after a fire in 1574. The northern aisle was probably also added in the 16th century. The southern aisle was added between 1717 and 1721.

The interior is covered by a barrel vault with pointed arches. The central nave, which adjoins the choir with the same width, is separated from the flat-roofed side aisles by strong pillar arcades.

The high altar was modeled on the former main altar of Strasbourg Cathedral from 1680-1685. The altarpiece shows the baptism of Christ by Jakob Heybel from 1686, the front section is decorated with four twisted columns and side figures of Saints Sebastian and Catherine of Alexandria.

The most important piece of the furnishings is the southern side altar with its structure made of acanthus tendrils. In the central niche there is a moving figure of Saint Joseph with child, to the sides there are figures of Saints Francis Xavier and Ignatius, above which voluminous tendrils are formed into consoles for the half-figures of Saints Joachim and Anne.

On the left side altar from 1744 there are figures of the Queen of Heaven and Saints Dominic and Catherine of Siena giving the rosary.

A hexagonal baptismal font dates from the 16th century. On the south-west pillar there is a group of Anna Selbdritt from the cemetery church of St. Anna, which was created around 1525 by the master of the high altar there. On the opposite pillar there is the Pietà group by Schaller. The figure of Saint John of Nepomuk to the right of the choir arch is by the same master. On the eastern pillars are figures of the princes of the apostles Peter and Paul, which probably date from the second half of the 17th century.

The vault paintings were created around 1720; in the choir they show the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament by the parish patrons, while in the central nave scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist are depicted. In the northern aisle you can see the handing over of the rosary to St. Dominic, the destruction of heretics by lightning bolts emanating from Mary and the expulsion of devils by angels with rosaries.
