The Mainz South Bridge, built in the middle of the 19th century, was the first permanent bridge over the Rhine in Mainz after the Roman Bridge. Towers were built at both bridgeheads, but these were purely decorative. After the Second World War, only the towers on the Mainz side remained, and are now owned by Deutsche Bahn (DB). As a DB spokeswoman explains, people actually lived in the towers. However, the towers have not been rented out as living space for almost five years. Today they are empty and protected from vandalism, the spokeswoman says. It remains to be seen whether anyone will live in the towers again at some point. At least they are not attractive living space, the spokeswoman explains. The reason: their direct proximity to the tracks and their round base, which makes comfortable living difficult.
