The Hamburg Speicherstadt is the world's largest historic warehouse complex, located in the port of Hamburg. It covers the area between Baumwall and Oberhafen. The Speicherstadt has been a listed building since 1991 and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since July 5, 2015, together with the neighboring Kontorhausviertel, under the name Speicherstadt and Kontorhausviertel with Chilehaus. It is part of Hamburg's colonial heritage. The Speicherstadt was built between 1883 and 1927 south of the old town on the former Elbe islands and residential quarters of Kehrwieder and Wandrahm as part of the Hamburg Free Port in three phases; the first phase was completed in 1888. The construction was managed by the chief engineer of the Hamburg Building Deputation, Franz Andreas Meyer. He was assisted by the hydraulic engineering director Christian Nehls and the building director Carl Johann Christian Zimmermann, as well as a consortium of 15 engineers, 24 architects and draftsmen. The architect Georg Thielen (1853–1901) designed around 30 warehouses at Neuer Wandrahm, Am Sandtorkai, Auf dem Sande, Brook and Kehrwieder. The Speicherstadt was removed from the area of the free port (dissolved in 2013) on January 1, 2003. It and the new development area on the Grosser Grasbrook were declared part of the HafenCity district in the Hamburg-Mitte district on March 1, 2008.
