Did you know that football and tennis were played in Županja for the first time in Croatia? Nine Englishmen who decided to build a tannin factory in Županja in 1880 are responsible for the beginning of the sports tradition in this town. One of them, Fredy Hepburn, married Katarina Horvatović, who thus became the first shock lady, a favorite even in high English society.

If you have already visited Vukovar and Vinkovci, Županja will provide you with a completely different experience and reveal the ambiance of unique village architecture. There you will learn that "shorvanje" means the joining of smaller surrounding hamlets into a single whole. The frontier history of Županja from the era of the Ottoman Empire left a deep mark on the city, and the Sava River and the Slavonic forests are woven into the lives of its inhabitants. Graničarski čardak is the most beautiful testimony of history and the only remaining military monument on Sava.
