Starting from Rjukan:
The trail begins at lower elevations (around 200-300 meters) in the valley town of Rjukan.
You will initially follow a moderate incline along well-marked paths that gradually wind upward through wooded areas. The forested terrain is primarily dirt paths, with some tree roots and rocks, but overall manageable for most hikers.
The surroundings are lush and green, with a peaceful atmosphere as the trail meanders through pine and birch trees.
Forest and Transition to Open Terrain:
As you continue upward, the trail progressively gets steeper and rockier. The tree line starts to thin, and more open, rugged terrain emerges.
At this stage, the path transitions from dense forest into more open heathland, with views starting to open up towards the valley below.
The surface becomes rockier, with small streams crossing the path in some areas, which may be slippery if it has recently rained.
Approaching Melandstjønn:
As you near Melandstjønn, the trail becomes slightly more rugged, with larger rocks dotting the path. However, it is still less strenuous than the climb beyond this point.
Melandstjønn is a scenic mountain lake nestled in a relatively flat, open area. This spot is a good place for a rest or snack before tackling the steeper parts of the trail that follow.
The lake and its surrounding area have a more alpine feel, with sparse vegetation, low bushes, and moss-covered rocks. It’s a peaceful and scenic location with cool, fresh mountain air.
