It is assumed that Roman building remains can be found under the current parish church. Saint Gebhard, Bishop of Constance (979-995), is said to have consecrated a church in Opfenbach, but otherwise we know little about the first medieval church. After the Swedish fire in 1632, the parish church at that time was only partially restored. Since a renovation and expansion would have cost as much as a new building, it was decided in 1772 to build a new late baroque church. Joseph Gunz, the master builder from Bregenz, provided the plans for the new building. Only the medieval church tower remained standing. In 1782, the church was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Josef Leopold from Constance."
