A great walk to Coral Beach at Claigan, just north of Dunvegan.

The beach is made of crushed white coral, like seaweed, which gives the water a tropical blue look when the sun rises. A truly magical spot, perfect for a picnic and perhaps a swim.

Claigan is a 10 minute drive from Dunvegan Castle, combining the walk to Coral Beach and a visit to the castle can make a great day out.

The walk to the beach is easy via a farm track and takes approximately 25 minutes to reach the beach. The return route is the same route back to the car park, making a total walk of 3.6km and 45 minutes (without stops).

The car park is at the end of the single track road. There is an official gravel car park, on a sunny day it can get busy, park sensibly and do not block the road or farm gates.

All dogs must be kept on a lead. There is absolutely no camping, no campfires and you are allowed to take your rubbish home with you.

Although it is called Coral Beach, it is not actually coral. It is ground bleached skeletons of Red Coralline seaweed (also known as Maërl). On the reef at Lampay Island, Coralline grows very slowly at 1mm per year. There are also many different and colorful shells on the beach, have a look, but don't take them home!

Right on the beach is a small hill known as the 'Ghrobain'. A 2 minute climb up will give you a great view.

There is a small island maybe 150m offshore from the beach called 'Lampay'. At very low tide a coral dam is exposed giving access to the island, a great opportunity to explore!

Coral Beach on the Isle of Skye is known for its unique white sand, which is actually fossilized algae. The beach offers stunning views, especially when the sun makes the water appear tropical blue.

Try coming in from the summit of Beinn Bhreac for a remote experience.
