From 1998 to 2014, a silted-up loop of the Holtwicker Bach (blue arrow) was renaturalized and "brought back to life". In the small forest, the revived oxbow (blue arrow) now flows in gentle loops. Until 1998, the stream (green arrows) only ran in a straight line from the Bahia, then under the bridge on the Finkenberg, straight behind the houses (Moddenborgstrasse) along to the bridge at the Moddenborg farm. This is still how it is shown today on Komoot and Google Maps!!☝

Now, however, the main stream (blue arrow) flows through the forest, winding picturesquely. Only in heavy rain or high water does water reach the Blänke (purple arrow) and can spread out there like a kind of floodplain. This is regulated by guide structures with a threshold height of HQ10.

Maybe this will be shown on maps in the future?! 🤔😅

A largely silted-up oxbow (blue arrow) of the Holtwicker Bach was desilted, deepened and reconnected to the river (green arrow). Landscape-typical trees were planted. These measures extended the course of the stream, increased structural diversity and stabilized the communities of life in the river. In the following years, the development of the flora and fauna was documented as part of biology lessons at St. Josef Gymnasium.

Due to new findings, new guidelines and laws in recent years, there has been significant further development and the water has been completely restored to a near-natural state. Particular attention was paid to keeping the risk of the oxbow becoming silted up again as low as possible. The reactivation measure represents a significant hydraulic and water-ecological improvement. The oxbow (blue arrow) was connected to the Holtwicker Bach (green arrow) on both sides while simultaneously desilting and deepening it.

In the future, the area of the Holtwicker Bach between the two connection points (purple arrow) will only carry water during extreme rainfall, while the normal flow will be channeled through the old arm (blue arrow). For this reason, guide structures were built just behind and in front of the connections, each of which is high enough that the water will flow over them in the event of a 10-year flood.
