A city lock was mentioned as early as 1408, although its former location is not known exactly. According to the city's cost books, existing locks were also completely renovated in 1820 and 1870, and a new lock was built at the level of the Schanze as part of the first Aa regulation in 1897/98. This survived the bombing of Bocholt in 1945 unscathed. As the Bocholter Aa had to be completely re-regulated in several sections due to repeated floods (1903, 1925, 1946 and 1960), the dam here on the lock wall and the pedestrian bridge leading over it were rebuilt again in February 1965. It had its first test on December 9, 1965, when there was extreme flooding and the city center was spared.

At the lock you can see what power a flowing body of water can have.
