In March 1875, the Saloppe was inaugurated as Dresden's first waterworks. It was put into operation shortly afterwards, so that the year 1875 is seen as the beginning of the modern public water supply in Dresden.

The name "Saloppe" is derived from "Wutki Chalupka" ("schnapps stall"). This was a name for the bar of Russian soldiers at the time, which was located near the waterworks during the Seven Years' War (1756-1763).

The building has been used as a luxury residential complex since 2014.

There is still a beer garden above the building today.
