The Granitz hunting lodge was built between 1837 and 1846 on the 107-metre-high forested Tempelberg near Binz. From the 38 meter high central tower, which was only added in 1844, you have a fantastic panoramic view of Rügen and you can see Binz Bay.
The castle was once a residence for princely guests during the hunting season. Today it is a very popular destination for young and old. With over 250,000 visitors a year, it is the most visited castle in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Since 1472 the Granitz belonged to the Lords of Putbus. In 1726, Count Moritz Ulrich I had the two-story hunting lodge "Solitüde" with two free-standing pavilions built in a forest clearing. 1730 arose nearby, on the highest elevation of the Granitz, the 107 m above sea level. NN high Tempelberg, a two-story belvedere in half-timbered construction, which developed into a popular destination. This was demolished in 1810 in order to build a new lookout tower in its place in the form of a medieval keep. However, this project remained unfulfilled. Instead, the hunting lodge was first modernized in 1814 in a neo-Gothic style.
