The monument commemorates the launching of the MS Sanok general cargo ship in 1966.

The ship was 99.5 m long, had a deadweight tonnage of 3,015 DWT, served in the years 1966-1987 and was owned by Polskie Linie Oceaniczne.

The monument with anchors is a very exotic souvenir in Sanok, considering that Sanok is not a seaside city, it does not even have a navigable connection to the sea, like Gliwice has (via the Gliwice Canal and the Oder), where to emphasize this connection and the maritime nature of the city stands the Neptune monument*. 😀

Sanok, located in the remote, south-eastern corner of Poland, is one of the cities located farthest from the Baltic coast. By road from Sanok to the nearest sea coast (Stegna commune) is about 750 km, and to the Black Sea and Adriatic even further.
