The Ponte della Pia is a bridge of Roman origin, rebuilt in the Middle Ages, along the SS 73 just after the village of Rosia. The single-arch bridge, which dates back to the early 13th century, connects the two banks of the Rosia River and played the Verga. Once we cross the bridge, we are on the other side of the gorge, where the stream flows and where the road, called "Manliana", is rebuilt during the 15th century and leads to the Hermitage of Santa Lucia in Rosia.
According to tradition, the name derives from the Sienese noblemen Pia de 'Tolomei, who perhaps belonged to the Guastelloni family of Siena an important role on the route of the old Via Massetana, which linked Siena with the Maremma. (c) wikipedia.it
