Nietheim was first mentioned in 1152 as Nitheim, and at that time belonged to the Neresheim Monastery. During the Thirty Years' War, the town completely died out. Abbot Benedict had a small castle built in 1784, which later passed to the Thurn and Taxis family and currently serves (as of 2018) as a forester's lodge.
