The place Gravelotte owes its name to the Battle of Gravelotte (18 August 1870) in the Franco-Prussian War. Three men from the nearby village of Meesiger took part in this battle. One of them, the carpenter Fritz Ewald, bought about 28 acres of land on the west bank of Lake Kummerow with his military pay after his return.
On 18 August 1873 – exactly three years after the battle – he inaugurated a refreshment stop/inn in the Swiss chalet style and named it Gravelotte in memory of the battle. The name was officially registered.
