The open sluice lock with a bascule bridge above it allowed the sailing ships with masts free passage into the harbor behind the dyke.

In earlier times, the harbor entrance for the Carolinensieler Hafen, today the museum harbor, was here. The bascule bridge, built in the Dutch style and restored in 1990, also allows sailing ships to pass through to the museum harbor in the center of Carolinensiel.
