The Bolshaya Moskovskaya Hotel was built during the heyday of the hotel business in Odessa. Moscow entrepreneurs D. and G. Dementyev and V. Vasiliev, who were engaged in the supply of tea from China to Russia, purchased the nondescript Biryukov House on Deribasovskaya, 29 and decided to build a hotel in its place[1]. The building was designed by the architect Lev Vlodek, who also built the House with Atlanteans and the Passage Hotel in Odessa. The exquisite stucco work was created by sculptors Toviy Fishel and S. Milman. The hotel was considered first-class, but not the most expensive. Some residents of Odessa lived in the hotel permanently. On the first floor there were trade offices: a tea shop, a lamp shop, a haberdashery shop. The Tatar restaurant was also located here.
