Late Winter
March is swan month in the Sámi languages. It is the beginning of the swan's breeding season. The first migratory birds such as pinebills, swans and snow squaws arrive in the Arctic. The return of the sun after a long period of darkness was a sign of new life for the Sámi. The increasing light calls life to come out again.
April, the month of snow crusting in Sámi, is a time when the sun shines on the snow, making it wet during the day.
Ice cold at night hardens the snow into a snow layer that supports both people and animals.
