Autumnal summer

August has been called the season of shedding, as this is the time when reindeer change into winter fur. In nature, change is continuous, as summer begins to shade into autumn. Late summer is also harvest time - the time of year when we gather the riches of the forests and swamps for the winter.

Preserved berries are an important source of food in winter, and the long daylight hours of the Arctic summer give the berries a unique aroma. In the past, the Sámi dried bilber-ries (blueberries) to be used as stomach medicine, while crowberries were saved for spring, when they were added, still frozen, to soup. Cloudberries were preserved in wooden containers with lots of sugar. Bilberries and wolfberries were preserved by crushing or boiling.
