Scharbeutz dates back to a Slavic settlement that was founded around the year 1000 as Scorbuze. Scharbeutz only became the popular tourist resort it is today in 1850, when a Hamburg merchant set up a bathing establishment here.

In Scharbeutz, the tourist crowds are not quite as huge as in the neighboring Timmendorfer Strand. You can stroll along the Baltic Sea on a beautiful promenade or on the sandy beach. There are of course plenty of restaurants and fish sandwiches. From the beach you have a pretty good view of the Bay of Lübeck. On the left are Neustadt and the Hansa Park, among others, and on the right you can see the mouth of the Trave. Scharbeutz's central location also meant that the town was heavily flooded during the great storm surge in 1872.
