    Walserweg R 35 Route: San Bernardino – Brand (A)
The Walserweg Graubünden follows the traces of the Walsers in the high valleys of Graubünden in 19 daily stages (300 km in total). The route runs along historical paths through breathtaking natural and intact cultural landscapes. Hikers are offered insights into the culture of the Walsers and their history.
The trail begins in the village of San Bernardino. The first settlers from the Valais came over the pass of the same name around 1270 and settled in the Rheinwald. In Hinterrhein, Nufenen and Splügen, the mighty houses still remind us of the time of the packhorse drivers, as the Splügen Pass, the Safierberg as well as the Passo del S. Bernardino and the Valserberg were important north-south connections. The route leads through historically grown cultural landscapes and typical scattered Walser settlements. The hiking time per stage is between 4.5 and 7 hours. There is enough time to enjoy and discover the beautiful landscape. Alpine passes connect the high valleys, along the way you come across fresh mountain lakes and protected raised bogs, you go through species-rich alpine meadows and shady stone pine and larch forests. These impressive natural areas alternate with evidence of Walser pasture and alpine farming. Typical slanting wooden fences, Walser houses burnt black by the sun, round log stables and regional structural differences, such as the stone roofs in Vals or the wooden shingle roofs in the Safiental, make this long-distance hiking trail so appealing.

Each hiking stage comes to a successful end with a cozy dinner with the locals. Be it in a typical Walser town like Safien, Avers, St. Antönien or Langwies or in large Walser tourism destinations like Davos, Klosters or Arosa.
