Hohensyburg, also known as Sigiburg, is an impressive castle ruin in the Syburg district of Dortmund and a popular tourist destination with a fascinating history. Its origins date back to 775, when Charlemagne conquered the original Saxon refuge. It was later replaced by a stone castle in the 12th century, the ruins of which have survived to this day. From the castle you have a breathtaking view of the Ruhr valley and the surrounding landscapes, especially the Hengsteysee and the mouth of the Lenne into the Ruhr.In addition to the ruins of the castle, there are other interesting sights, including the Vincketurm, a 19th-century observation tower, and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial, which commemorates the founding of the empire. The surrounding area offers numerous hiking trails, such as the Syburger Bergbauweg, which leads past old mines, and nature reserves such as the Ruhr steep slopes, which are ideal for walks. If you fancy a change, you can visit the nearby Casino Hohensyburg, one of the largest casinos in Germany.
