Vejlen used to be a fjord connected to the sea. In 1765, a dam with a lock was built to close off the fjord and drain the land behind it. On New Year's Eve 1904/05, the dam broke. Although it was rebuilt, Tåsinge Vejle was never completely drained again. A very shallow brackish water lake was created. Vejle has been owned by the Danish Nature Agency for several years. Various water birds breed here. During the migration period, the lake and the shallow areas off the coast are resting places for various migratory and resting birds.
