Pond Mountain stands at just under 5,000 feet above sea level. This grassy open peak offers expansive views of the three surrounding states: Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. To the north in Virginia, you can see Grayson Highlands State Park, Jefferson National Forest, Mount Rogers, and White Top Mountain. To the west, Tennessee’s Cherokee National Forest is visible. East and south of the summit are the high peaks of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. The mountain is a key watershed area, contributing to the New River, and features diverse wildlife habitats. Peter Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson’s father, surveyed the area to make the border between, North Carolina and Virginia, and gave Pond Mountain its name because of the many natural ponds that dotted the mountain’s high ridgeline. This is an incredibly scenic, relatively remote spot on the state's border. Hunting and camping are popular here too so please be aware of hunting season and when in doubt, wear orange!
