On the west bank of the Defence Canal near Mill in Brabant, a casemate (bunker) was built every 200 to 400 metres, where people could hide in case of danger. These casemates offered shelter to 3 to 4 people and were equipped with a machine gun. Most of these casemates had three loopholes, 1 of which was for a machine gun and the other two for a rifle. Trenches were made for people who could not find a place in a bunker.
Although the casemates were no longer needed to hide in during bombings and shootings after the war, the Stichting Sporen van de Oorlog Mill made sure that they were not demolished. Not much later, the casemates were declared a monument (i.e. they were monumental from then on, no other changes occurred). The casemates form a route along which people can cycle and commemorate Mill's past. The bunkers are maintained by the Stichting Sporen van de oorlog Mill. Source: tracesofwar.nl

Beautiful gravel path along the defense canal. Cool to cycle along the bunkers. Gives a special atmosphere. Be careful when passing the bunkers. You can't always see the oncoming traffic that well. So adjust your speed sometimes.
