The village of Abcoude already existed before the castle was built around 1080. Zweder van Sulen may have been the person who commissioned the construction of the castle. The former castle is now called Slot Abcoude. The castle was first mentioned when it was destroyed by Gijsbrecht van Amstel in 1274.
According to some writings, the reconstruction of the castle, however unlikely, was not to take place until 1328. After the death of Jacob van Gaesbeek, the castle came into the possession of David of Burgundy in 1459.
