After the First World War, a military fortress mentality developed in Europe, which was rooted in the experience of trench warfare and the extremely high human losses. The French Maginot Line, planned by André Maginot, was an expression of the French need for protection against Germany and was built as a defensive measure over many years. Other European border fortifications were added, such as the Czechoslovak fortification lines on the border with Germany, built under French leadership.
