There is a midsummer pole in almost every village in Åland. The midsummer pole, richly decorated with leaves and other decorations, is typical of the Åland midsummer festival and an old symbol of summer fertility.
Each village has its own traditions for the festival and the design of the midsummer pole - no two poles are the same.
Some poles are decorated with colorful midsummer crowns, others are kept completely green and decorated with foliage wreaths and laurel garlands. The leaves represent a good harvest and form hourglasses or diamond patterns when stretched out.
